Exams / Assessments

All ITIL Foundation and Intermediate exams can be taken online (virtually) using a service provided by PeopleCert.

When you have completed the learning objectives of each course, you will be ready to start preparing for the associated exam. To support you with this, each course contains a practice exam that will simulate the conditions of the real thing.

Before you book you can test that your computer configuration will meet the requirements for a PeopleCert exam, using this online test. This test focuses on the suitability of your webcam, microphone and internet connection. Please Visit the PeopleCert website for a complete list of information and guidance.

What you need to know about the ITIL Foundation exam:

  • The examination is multiple choice

  • The examination is closed book

  • The examination consists of 40 questions to be answered within 60 minutes

  • To pass the exam you must score 26/40 (65%)

What you need to know about the ITIL Intermediate exams:

  • Each Intermediate exam carries a different amount of ITIL credits (please check before you start your studies)

  • The examination is a complex multiple choice

  • The examination is scenario-based and closed book

  • The examination consists of 8 questions to be answered within 90 minutes

  • To pass the exams you must score 28/40 (70%)

  • Candidates sitting an examination in a language other than their first language have a maximum of 120 minutes and are allowed to use a dictionary

What you need to know about the ITIL Managing Across the Lifecycle (MALC) exam:

  • The exam is based on a case study

  • Between eight and ten questions will be case study-based

  • A maximum of two questions will not be based on the case study. Each question will state clearly whether it is case study-based

  • To pass the exam you must score 35/50 (70%)

  • Successfully passing the exam will earn delegates five credits towards ITIL Expert level

  • Candidates will have 120 minutes to complete the exam (those sitting the examination in a language other than their first language will have a maximum of 150 minutes and will be allowed to use a dictionary)

So how do you become an ITIL expert?

  • Each student, as a prerequisite, must have passed the ITIL Foundation level exam and hold a certificate of proof

  • Students must achieve a minimum of 17 credits from the Foundation module and any combination of Intermediate ITIL modules

  • Certain credits achieved from earlier qualifications and complementary qualifications can also count towards these 17 credits. See the Axelos ITIL Credit System page for more information

  • The Managing Across the Lifecycle (MALC) module must be taken and the exam passed to ensure a total credit score of 22 (the minimum required for ITIL Expert Certification)

  • Candidates should achieve a balanced knowledge base across the full ITIL Service Lifecycle
